Samsung to replace messaging app with Google Messages

FYI, Samsung users: The tech giant is discontinuing its Messages app soon.

In a March 30 announcement, Samsung said it will replace its messaging app with Google Messages.

"Upgrade to Google Messages as your default messaging app today to maintain a consistent messaging experience on Android," the brand advised its users.

While Samsung did not disclose the reason behind its decision, it noted that Google Messages has AI-powered features as its benefits, which include a Gemini AI assistant; AI-powered scam detection and robust spam filters; and RCS Messaging enabled across Android and iOS, letting you "share high-quality photos and videos, enhance your group chats, see real-time typing indicators, and more."

The company also announced that Samsung Messages will not be available for download on Galaxy S26 or new devices, while Samsung devices released before 2022 may experience temporary disruption of RCS conversations that can be remedied by switching to Google Messages.

For those with older-generation smartwatches using the Tizen OS, messaging will no longer be supported following the transition.

According to Samsung, the change will be applied by July for the US market. "Please check the Samsung Messages app for the exact date when service will be discontinued. Users of an older Android OS (Android 11 or lower) are not affected by this End of Service," it said.

How to switch from Samsung Messages to Google Messages

While users can switch to the new messaging service through a Samsung Messages in-app notification, they can also switch manually by following these instructions provided by Samsung.

  1. Open or download Google Messages. A message that reads "To use Messages, make it your default SMS app" will appear for first-time users.
  2. Click "Set default SMS app."
  3. Tap Google Messages, which is the white icon with the blue conversation bubble.
  4. Choose "Set as default."
