WATCH: 'Stranger Things' prequel, 'Other Worlds' unveils first teaser
Missing the adventures from the Upside Down? Before Hawkins, the Stranger Things prequel takes fans to Marion, Nevada.
Netflix officially unveiled the first teaser for Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, which is set in April 1955 in Marion, Nevada. The announcement was made during the "Stranger Things" day on Nov. 6, the day Will Byers disappeared in Hawkins in the original show.
The series is coming to the platform in 2028. More details about the plot are still under wraps.
It will be co-created by the Duffer brothers and Kate Trefry, a writer on Stranger Things and the writer of The First Shadow. Trefry will also serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series.
Show creators Matt and Ross Duffer previously teased the project in the final episode of Stranger Things 5, which they said will explore different mythology.
In the backstory, a young Henry Creel found a briefcase clutched by an injured scientist. Inside was a glowing, veined rock that gave him supernatural powers and eventually transformed him into Vecna. The Duffer brothers described the scene as "Spinoffy."
"The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it. But it’s a completely different mythology. So it’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining," Matt said.
This is the latest project in the Stranger Things universe. After the original show, it now has an animated series Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, and the stage show Stranger Things: First Shadow, which tells the backstory of Henry Creel, aka Vecna.
Released in 2016, Stranger Things is set in the quiet town of Hawkins, Indiana, where a series of unsettling and supernatural events expose dark government experiments and supernatural forces from the parallel dimension.
