Here's what you need to know about MMDA's free bike-sharing services
Running a quick errand but don't want to break the bank on a ride-hailing app or wait for public transpo? The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has your back with its free bike-sharing service.
First launched in 2013 to help ease traffic, the revived initiative lets you get around the metro using a bike for free. Whether you need to go out for an errand, sneak in some cardio, or just beat the traffic, these bikes are available to use.
Here are things you need to know:
How bike-sharing works
MMDA is making bicycles available for rental on certain bike shelters in the metro, which are as follows:
- Bike Shelter 1: Under Luzon Avenue Flyover, Commonwealth Avenue -Luzon Avenue Station, Quezon City (QC)
- Bike Shelter 2: Under EDSA-Ortigas Flyover, EDSA-Ortigas Station, QC
- Bike Shelter 3: Baywalk, Roxas Boulevard/Quirino Station, Manila
These shelters operate from Monday to Sunday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Bicycles, including helmets, can be borrowed for free under certain terms.
Borrowing a bicycle
To rent a bike for free, fill out a bike-sharing form and present your latest valid ID at MMDA's designated bike shelters.
From there, you may now pick up the bicycle and helmet. Do note that the borrowed bicycle is only limited for a two to four-hour use.
Returning the bicycle
The rented bicycle and helmet should be returned to the bike shelter where it was borrowed.
Take a photo of the returned bicycle then retrieve your valid Identification ID from the bike shelter. You would then be tasked to accomplish a client survey form before you go.
What happens to lost/unreturned bicycles?
If a borrowed bicycle is lost or stolen, borrowers must immediately report the incident to the nearest police station. Afterward, you must visit the MMDA Legal and Legislative Affairs Office to submit the police report and any related documents.
For unreturned bicycles, MMDA will take steps to recover and return them to their designated shelters.
