Social Security System president and CEO Robert Joseph Montes de Claro has been appointed as the new secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology.

His new role was confirmed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Before joining the government, De Claro built a career spanning more than three decades in business management, including leadership roles in technology and business services companies.

He has a bachelor's degree in computer science, specializing in information technology, from De La Salle University.

He joined the Social Security Commission as the employers' sector representative in January 2023 before being appointed SSS president and CEO in December 2024.

As SSS chief, his initiatives included pension increases, improvements to salary and calamity loan programs, and the launch of the MySSS Card, which combines an identification card with a savings account.

De Claro succeeds Henry Aguda, who resigned from the position amid allegations of irregularities in government-funded internet connectivity projects.

In a statement, Aguda expressed his gratitude to Marcos for the opportunity to serve as the DICT secretary since last year.

"It has been a privilege and an honor to lead the Department and contribute to the country’s digital transformation agenda. I am committed to ensuring a smooth and orderly transition, with the continuity of essential functions, operations, and ongoing digital initiatives safeguarded," he said.

He also thanked the dedicated men and women of the DICT for their hard work, professionalism, and commitment to public service.

"I am equally grateful to the Filipino people for their trust and support throughout my tenure. Serving the Filipino people through the advancement of our nation’s digital future has been a distinct honor," he ended
