Tourist dies after falling from waterfall while trying to take a picture
A tourist fell to his death while trying to take a picture on top of a waterfall in Brazil.
According to a report by CNN Brazil, the 36-year-old man, identified as Caio Libero Batistela, fell from a height of about 40 meters while taking a picture on the São Jorge River waterfall in Parque São Jorge, in Ponta Grossa.
Rescuers from the local fire department detailed that the victim got close to the edge when he lost his balance and tumbled down the rocky cliff.
The Fire Department was alerted around 2:50 p.m., and four firefighters responded to the call.
As the accident site was difficult to reach, a helicopter was deployed to assist in the rescue. The man, however, died at the scene.
"The person who was with him even tried to hold onto his clothes, but unfortunately couldn't and almost fell too," Fire Department Cadet Gustavo Sabatoski told G1.
The São Jorge River is situated at the top of a steep, rocky gorge and features a small pond at the base. It is known for being surrounded by hazardous terrain.
