Katy Perry shares how unexpected romance with Justin Trudeau started
Katy Perry has opened up about unexpectedly finding love in former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after a difficult period that included her breakup with Orlando Bloom.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the Firework singer reflected on how her Lifetimes Tour helped her reconnect with her purpose and eventually meet Trudeau.
“I learned how to step back into my purpose,” she told the media publication. “And I got the greatest gift from this tour: I got to meet the love of my life.”
Perry and Trudeau first sparked dating rumors in July 2025, when they were spotted together in Montreal while she was on tour. At the time, she had recently separated from Bloom after nearly nine years together. Recalling the period surrounding their breakup, Perry said she was in Australia when news of the split became public and struggled with being far from her support system.
“It was probably the hardest time. My friends were all hanging out back home. I was crying and just feeling far away,” she said. “But then my angels went to work. They really showed up.”
“I got to meet Justin on tour, and then things shifted,” she added.
The singer reflected on what she learned from her former relationship with Bloom, with whom she shares a daughter named Daisy Dove.
“I wouldn’t have stayed in something for nine years if there weren’t really important things to learn. Each relationship is a teacher, right?” she said. “I had to let it go so I could move forward.”
She continued, “I always wanted this epic legendary love, and I was talking to my therapist about it: Everything in my life is epic, but this is kind of the missing puzzle piece—then it showed up.”
Perry also spoke about the support Trudeau has shown her during her tour, saying he attended 10 of her 20 shows over the summer.
“He knows the words, he’s supportive, and he’s in awe. It’s super healing,” she said. “He is really heart-centered, and I think that we align in that way. I’m so grateful.”
Trudeau was previously married to Canadian television host Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. The couple tied the knot in May 2005 and welcomed three children together: Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien. They announced their separation in August 2023 after 18 years of marriage, saying they had made the decision after “many meaningful and difficult conversations.”
Perry and Trudeau made their red carpet debut in June at the Tribeca Festival premiere of Perry’s concert film, Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris.
