Boy from viral 'Baby Shark' music video to make K-pop debut
Remember the adorable young boy who had the internet doing the Baby Shark dance? He’s all grown up—and he’s now diving into the world of K-pop!
The Pinkfong Company, which made the viral Baby Shark dance, took to their YouTube channel to post a clip showing the now 17-year-old Park Geon-roung with the caption, "Guess who's back?!"
In a report by Business Korea, Geon-roung will be making his debut under the name "Baby Shark Boy," with his first single WAVE to be released on Aug. 20. The song will feature vocals from South Korean rapper Lee Joo-heon from Monsta X.
A teaser for the song's music video has also been released on his YouTube channel, featuring a remixed version of Baby Shark as Geon-roung sings what appears to be lyrics from his upcoming track.
Sharing his thoughts on his new career path, Geon-roung said, "I have always been grateful that people remember my appearances from my childhood. Ten years ago, I danced next to Baby Shark, but now I want to share stories I wrote myself and my own voice."
The Pinkfong Company meanwhile told The Korea Herald that his debut is meant to showcase Geon-roung's own identity as an artist.
“This isn’t just about bringing back the boy from the video. It’s about him telling his own story, and we want to carry that new beginning forward authentically,” a company representative told the outlet.
Geon-roung starred in the Baby Shark music video when he was just six years old.
Since its release in 2016, the video has become a massive internet phenomenon, racking up more than 17 billion views on YouTube and turning its catchy choreography into a worldwide trend. It is also currently the most-viewed video of all time on the platform.
