Man found dead in tanning bed three days later
A man was discovered lifeless in a tanning bed at a gym after three days.
Local media outlet Indianapolis Star reported that a dead body was found in the tanning bed of a Planet Fitness branch in Indianapolis on Monday morning, Nov. 11. The victim was reported missing by his family the day prior, although it was found that he got into the tanning bed last Friday, Nov. 8.
PEOPLE Magazine reported that the man was identified by the Marion County Coroner's Office as 39-year-old Derek Sink.
A spokesperson for the Indianapolis Metro Police Department told the publication that an investigation is ongoing and the cause of his death is yet to be determined.
Sink's relatives said he wore an ankle monitor, which showed that he had no plans of leaving the gym at the time.
Tanning has been made unavailable at the Planet Fitness location since the incident happened.
McCall Gosselin, who serves as chief corporate affairs officer for the gym, said in a statement sent to PEOPLE that they're "deeply saddened" about what happened. "The franchise owner is working with the local authorities in their investigation," she added.
Gosselin also assured that the gym has "robust operational brand protocols in place," putting the safety and well-being of their members at the top of their priorities. "We are working closely with our local franchisee to ensure they are upholding those brand protocols,” she continued.
