After more than a century, Philtranco Service Enterprises, Inc. has officially announced it will shut down on March 30, 2026.

According to multiple reports, President and CEO Michael M. Sabban expressed profound sadness over the decision in a memorandum addressed to stakeholders.

"It is with a heavy heart and deep regret that I announce the Official Business Stop Operation of Philtranco Service Enterprises, Inc., effective March 30, 2026,” he wrote.

“For years, we have fought an uphill battle to keep our wheels turning. However, due to serious business losses, we can no longer sustain our business operations,” he added.

The decision follows a period of severe financial strain, with Sabban admitting the company can no longer meet its payroll obligations. He described the move as a painful "absolute last resort," reached only after every possible avenue to save the business had been explored.

Sabban continued to thank its drivers and conductors, who were the "heartbeat" of their service and "guardians of [their] passengers," as well as the maintenance and office staff.

“Your professionalism in the face of these hardships has been nothing short of inspiring. We are deeply grateful for the years you gave to this journey,” the company wrote. “We wish you and your loved ones strength and the very best as you push the path ahead.”

On its Facebook page, Philtranco changed its profile picture to a "dimmed" logo. A wave of nostalgia also hit the comments section as long-time commuters shared their heartbreak over the news.

"Philtranco has been part of my childhood. My parents used to bring me along on their trips—can you imagine traveling for 3 days and 2 nights from Cagayan de Oro or Davao City to Pasay?" one said.

"Nakapag-asawa ako taga Iriga at thank you dahil sa paghatid sa akin, at sa amin eventually, mula Leyte pa- Iriga and vice versa. Wishing you all the best as you move toward a new beginning," another one wrote.

Philtranco, founded in 1914, holds the title of the oldest bus company in Asia. With over 250 buses, the company served as a link between the capital and the southern provinces, covering the Bicol, Eastern Visayas, and Mindanao regions, including Caraga, Davao, and Northern Mindanao.
