Here's when Alex Eala is playing at the Philippine Women's Open
The Philippine Women's Open is underway!
The first day of the inaugural WTA 125 event at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center is set to kick off on Jan. 26, as the qualifiers for the Single Draw are now complete.
On Jan. 22, Pinay tennis star Alex Eala, the world's no. 49, confirmed that she'll be participating in the Philippine Open, calling the games a huge milestone in local tennis.
Her first match will be against Russia's Alina Charaeva, the world's no. 163, who recently competed in the ASB Classic but was ousted by South Korea's Yeonwoon Ku in the first qualifying round.
Their face-off will take place at the Centre Court and is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Jan. 26.
"I'm here, I'm home. I'm so happy to be here. I'm alongside so many great Filipino athletes here at the draw," Eala said in a press conference on Jan. 23.
The 20-year-old Filipina added that she's faced off against Caraeva in the past. The Russian defeated her in the ITF Circuit in 2020.
"I have met her. She's a very nice person and a great player. So I'm just going to go, and I've done everything I can do to the best of my ability to prepare. I'm just going to go and do my best," she said.
Eala comes fresh off her Australian Open stint, where she exited in the first round of her singles and doubles campaigns.
She bowed out of the women's singles after the United States' Alycia Parks edged her out. While for the doubles draw, Eala and Brazil's Ingrid Martins were defeated by Shuko Aoyama and Magda Linette.
Several other Filipinas are competing at the Philippine Women's Open. Check out the schedule for Monday's matches below.
