Killer mom denied parole 30 years after drowning her two children

A woman who admitted to killing her two children by drowning them 30 years ago was denied parole.

BBC reported that Susan Smith from South Carolina spoke to the parole board that consisted of seven people and apologized for what she did in 1994.

"I know what I did was horrible," she confessed, "and I would give anything so I could change it."

David Smith, the father of the victims, stressed that 30 years in prison is still "not enough" punishment for Susan over the murders.

"That’s only 15 years per child, her own children. That’s just not enough," he said.

According to the media outlet, Susan strapped her kids—Michael, 3, and Alex, 1—into the seats of their car, which she let roll into a lake moments later.

Per prosecutors, Susan committed the crime after a man told her that he didn't see them having a future together because of her kids.

In the early parts of the trial, Susan lied about getting carjacked after the victims' bodies were discovered at the bottom of the lake. She, however, ended up admitting to the crime.

Susan was convicted of murder at the time, though parole hearings every two years after serving three decades in jail were permitted under South Carolina law.

Citing the state Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services, BBC reported that she "would need two-thirds of board members who are present to vote in her favor to be freed."
