One More Chance, The Musical

It seems Filipinos still can’t get enough of Popoy and Basha. Their story, lifted from the 2007 blockbuster One More Chance starring Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz, got a musical adaptation from PETA (Philippine Educational Theater Association) this 2024. From April to October, audiences swooned, laughed, and got emotional as Anna Luna (Basha) and Sam Concepcion (Popoy)—alternating with Nicole Omillo and CJ Navato, respectively—lived a heartwarming love story to the musical genius of Ben&Ben.

The wonderful thing about theater is that the audience is right there with the actors and crew. On stage, any story becomes 4D—so as Sam and CJ revealed Popoy’s red flags and Anna and Nicole’s Basha fell madly in love with him anyway, audience members felt everything along with the star-crossed lovers. Their tight barkada, excellently played by Poppert Bernadas, Rica Laguardia, Via Antonio, Jon Abella, and Johnnie Moran, provided balance before emotions got too heavy. Feelings were further magnified by the 22 tracks from Ben&Ben neatly woven into all the moments happening onstage. Maybe the Night and Sa Susunod na Habang Buhay were particularly well-placed, as if the songs also belonged in the film version. It’s so captivating that if PETA decides to do a restaging, Filipino theater fans will definitely be here for it.
