Prince Harry shares he worried about ‘history repeating itself’ before leaving the royal family

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, surprised everyone with their decision to formally drop their royal duties in January 2020.

In an excerpt from the couple’s highly-anticipated interview with talk show host Oprah Winfrey, Harry let slip his greatest fear before leaving the royal family: “history repeating itself.

Seemingly, he was talking about the unfortunate incident that his mother Princess Diana encountered in 1997, which led to her death. Diana, who was 36 years old at the time, “rode through a Paris tunnel in an attempt to outrun paparazzi photographers.” According to NBC News, the vehicle crashed into a concrete pillar, which killed her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and her driver at the scene. “The princess was rushed to a hospital where she later died,” the report read.

In his chat with Oprah, Harry expressed how “relieved and happy” he felt “to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side, because I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her (Diana), going through this process by herself all those years ago,” he said as he held his wife’s hand.

“It’s been unbelievably tough for the two of us but at least we had each other,” he continued.

According to Reuters, "the couple had complained about the British tabloids’ treatment of Meghan, whose father is white and mother is African-American, some of which they said amounted to bullying or racism."

In an interview with The Late Late Show host James Corden, Harry "has said he stepped back from the royal family last year because the British press was 'destroying' his mental health," as stated on CNN International.

In their talk “where no subject was off limits,” Oprah pointed out, “You said some pretty shocking things here.” It’s the first interview that the couple, who is expecting their second child, has granted since their move to the United States.

The two-part primetime special dubbed Oprah with Meghan and Harry is slated to be released on March 7 release on CBS.
