The University of the Philippines Diliman recently announced that it would temporarily close its Academic Oval to the public to curb the spread of the new COVID-19 variants.

In closing the Oval, the university raised concerns that the number of COVID-19 cases in the country has gone up again.

So for health and safety reasons, the Oval, whose 2.2-kilometer stretch is a favorite spot for those who love to run for exercise, will be closed to the public starting Jan. 23, Saturday until Feb. 4, Thursday, according to the announcement.

The Academic Oval will reopen to the public on Feb. 5, Friday.

In November last year, after the strict community quarantines, UP Diliman announced the reopening of the Oval for “de-stressing activities or usual exercises” including walking, jogging, running, yoga, stretching and tai-chi.

Furthermore, UP also announced in a Jan. 22 post that The College of Science Ampitheater and the National Science Complex grounds will also be closed to the public starting Jan. 23 “until further notice.”
