Meat-free Filipino faves like chicharon and kaldereta? Sure!

Going vegan can be challenging, especially for meat-loving Filipinos, as the food choices and how they’re made are still kind of alien to most of them. Meat-free chicharon? It poses a lot of questions taste-wise. Another reason is that vegan products aren’t widely available yet in the market.

Berde Eats, an online vegan shop, acknowledges this problem.

“Through our online store, we’re making vegan food products and personal care stuff accessible to everyone,” shares Marison Cabalcar, co-founder of Berde Eats. “And our food tastes good.”

According to Marison, she and her daughter had the same problem when they were just starting a vegan lifestyle.

“Putting up Berde Eats made our transition faster and easier,” she adds.

The vegan online shop started with only four products when it opened in 2017. Four years later, its product line grew to 270 vegan items.

Berde Eats supports local vegan food brands over imported ones. It serves vegan Bistek Tagalog from its partner brand Kwentong Dagat. The dish is made of soy protein instead of beef topped with red onions and the delish sauce. Kwentong Dagat also makes Berde Eats’ bestselling kaldereta.

Must-try dishes are vegan chicharon baboy from Shirley’s Just Vegan. It’s chicharon without the pork and cholesterol–just 100-percent plants; and sinantolan, santol (cotton fruit) simmered in coconut milk and plant-based spices. It goes well with steamed rice.

The meat-free BBQ tops the menu. “It’s one of our bestsellers, especially during Berde Eats’ pop-ups,” enthused Megan.

Berde Eats delivers to Metro Manila, and some areas of Rizal, Cavite, and Laguna. It also ships shelf-stable products like vegan liver spread nationwide.
