Sherlock Holmes gets supernatural twist in new Netflix series 'The Irregulars'

A supernatural game is afoot in the world of Sherlock Holmes!

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for The Irregulars, a new dark mystery series featuring magical teenage sleuths set in Victorian London.

According to its official synopsis, Netflix's dark new drama is set in 19th-century London and follows “a gang of troubled street teens who are manipulated into solving crimes for the sinister Doctor Watson and his mysterious business partner, the elusive Sherlock Holmes. As the crimes take on a horrifying supernatural edge and a dark power emerges, the Irregulars must come together to defeat larger than life forces.”

The eight-part drama puts the group of teenagers front and center in solving some of the fantastical cases.

The series is based on the Baker Street Irregulars gang from the original novels written by Sir Arther Conan Doyle, originally a group of street urchins that the iconic detective of 221B Baker Street would sometimes employ in his cases to get information he wouldn't normally be able to access.

In Netflix's adaptation, creator Tom Bidwell (My Mad Fat Diary, Watership Down) reimagined the young gang of street boys from the books into a slightly older group of teens. The unlikely gang are seen as the only ones who can stop an impending dark magical threat from destroying London—and they don't really need Holmes to do it.

"Our story focuses on the Irregulars, the gang themselves. It's their story, their adventure," Bidwell told Entertainment Weekly in the first look interview. "Sherlock Holmes is in the story, it's his world, but he's not the central focus. He plays a big part of it, don't get me wrong, but it's about the kids and their journeys."

The upcoming Netlifx series stars Thaddea Graham (Letter For The King, Us) as Bea; Darci Shaw (Judy) as Jessie; Jojo Macari (Sex Education) as Billy; Mckell David (Snatch) as Spike, Harrison Osterfield (Catch 22) as Leopold; Henry Lloyd-Hughes (Killing Eve) as Sherlock Holmes; Royce Pierreson (The Witcher) as John Watson, and Clarke Peters (His Dark Materials) as The Linen Man.

The Irregulars follows Netflix’s recent success with Enola Holmes starring Millie Bobbie Brown, which focused on the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes.

The Irregulars will start streaming on Netflix on March 26, 2021.
