RUMOR: Spidey-verse? Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield joining Tom Holland for Spider-Man 3

When news broke out that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his role as Electro in the upcoming Spider-Man 3, fans were rife with excitement about a possible gathering of Spideys from all previous live-action movies to create the “Spider-verse.”

Things are going towards that direction, if reports from FandomWire are to be believed. In a recent article, the website reported that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were in talks and have agreed to reprise their respective Spider-Man roles next to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the yet to be titled Spider-Man 3.

But these appearances are no mere cameos. The report says that both Maguire and Garfield will arrive in Tom Holland’s universe during the final act to help defeat all of the Spider-Men’s combined foes. If this sounds awfully like a team of Anti-Spidey villains, could it be the Sinister 6?

The website also claims that a Sony source familiar to the deal leaked the info and the studio is furious over the fact that many have been able to speculate and spoil this big surprise for fans.

Sony Pictures issued a comment regarding the Fandomwire story which, according to a report from ET Canada, fans have noted is neither a confirmation nor denial of the casting. “Those rumoured castings are not confirmed,” said a representative of the studio.

Aside from Foxx, who played Electro back in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), it was also reported that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will be on board to serve as a “mentor” to Peter Parker in the third film. Doctor Strange and Spider-Man have shared some screen time together in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Both Spider-Man and Doctor Strange were the creations of comic book artist Steve Ditko and the iconic writer Stan Lee, and the superhero duo has teamed up quite a few times in the pages of the comics back in the '70s and '80s.

Marvel’s Phase 3 wrapped up with Spider-Man: Far From Home. The film’s post-credit scene saw J. Jonah Jameson (played by actor J.K. Simmons from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy back in 2002) reveal Peter Parker’s true identity to the world. With recent reports fitting the puzzle so nicely, how long and how well can film studios keep the Spider-verse secret under wraps?
