These playful LEGO x IKEA storage boxes just click

IKEA and LEGO have teamed up to create a new collection of storage boxes, fitted with studs, on the lid that let you build directly onto their surfaces.

According to a Thursday release from IKEA, Bygglek (pronounced boog-lee-eck, which means "to build and play”) is designed to encourage play while tapping into the need for neat storage at home. The system consists of four different products: one set of three small boxes, two sets of bigger boxes, and one set of special LEGO bricks, for storing bricks conveniently and aesthetically. The boxes are completely compatible with existing and future LEGO products.

IKEA and LEGO just click naturally together. The collaboration between the Swedish manufacturer of ready-to-assemble furniture and Danish toy company known for their interlocking plastic bricks was first announced back in 2019 as a way to address the conflict between how grown-ups look at organizing and how children look at the creative play.

With more people spending time indoors because of the pandemic, hobbies like LEGO and home organizing are both high on the list of things to do. This product line can help parents keep their home life in order and spare their feet, while still allowing kids to have fun.

“Bygglek is more than boxes. It is storage and play intertwined,” said Lego designer Rasmus Buch Løgstrup. “Bygglek provides families with a product range that helps create space for more play in their everyday, fueling creativity, making it possible to have more fun together. It’s a possibility to play, display the cool creations and return to it to replay, remake, recreate or start over.”

The Bygglek collection is designed to match perfectly with other IKEA products and shelves, offering a fun and unique storage solution that will spark joy in everyone.

These LEGO-compatible boxes are expected to roll out at IKEA stores throughout North America and Europe (except Russia) starting October 1, and should be available to purchase worldwide later this year. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get our hands on these babies once the IKEA Philippines flagship store in Pasay City opens sometime in 2021.
