First look at HBO's new Victorian-era superhero series ‘The Nevers’
HBO has released the teaser trailer for The Nevers, a Victorian-era fantasy series that follows a group of women with intriguing abilities.
The series, set in the last years of Victorian England (circa the end of the 19th century), follows the emergence of the "Touched," a group of mostly women who exhibit extraordinary powers.
Among the Touched are a "mysterious, quick-fisted" widow named Amalia True (Laura Donnelly) and a brilliant young inventor named Penance Adair (Ann Skelly). The two, according to the official plot description, are "champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of—well, pretty much all the forces—to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place."
The ensemble cast also includes Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson, Amy Manson, Pip Torrens, Denis O'Hare, Zackary Momoh, Elizabeth Berrington, Kiran Sawar, Anna Devlin, Viola Prettejohn, Ella Smith, Nick Frost, and Ben Chaplin.
The series ordered by HBO on July 2018 was created by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Avengers) and was set to mark the director’s return to television. However, Whedon stepped down from the project in November 2020 and HBO tapped Philippa Goslett (Mary Magdalene, How to Talk to Girls at Parties) as the production's new showrunner and executive producer.
The Nevers was originally commissioned for 10 episodes, but filming was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The series resumed last fall and wrapped up in October.
According to HBO, only six episodes which were filmed before Whedon's departure will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in April, while the remainder of the first season which is under prepoduction under Goslett, will follow at a later time.
"While developing and producing The Nevers has been a joyful experience, I realize that the level of commitment required moving forward, combined with the physical challenges of making such a huge show during a global pandemic, is more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer," Whedon said in a statement announcing his departure.

The Nevers is set to premiere both on the premium cable channel and its streaming counterpart, HBO Max this April 2021.
