In celebration of International Women’s Day, motion design artist Mark Cañega used animation to bring to life one of National Artist Fernando Amorsolo’s works called Dalagang Bukid.

Cañega also created the viral animated version of Amorsolo’s Couple Riding a Carabao During Sunset for National History Month in February.

Amorsolo originally painted Dalagang Bukid in 1958 in oil on canvas. The painting bears his smiling muse, who is wearing baro’t saya and carrying a banga (clay jar).

Cañega’s animated version of Dalagang Bukid gives the audience a look at Amorsolo’s cheerful muse with her dainty movements. He also used an instrumental acoustic version of the Eraserheads song With a Smile, arranged by MJ Casiano, to accompany the clip.

In a previous interview, Cañega shared with PhilStar Life that in order for him to capture what the original painting was trying to convey, he puts himself in the mind of Amorsolo “while he was painting the scene, what was he thinking of, how chill (the surrounding) is.”

For his animation pieces like Dalagang Bukid, which he considers his passion projects,” Cañega painstakingly repaints each detail of the image digitally and makes sure that he respects Amrsolo’s work by maintaining the traditional look of the animation as much as possible.
