The first trailer for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is finally here, giving fans a look at some of the more crazy and obscure characters in the DC Universe.

Warner Bros. released the red-band trailer of The Suicide Squad on Friday (Mar. 26). The highly anticipated film which comes from the Guardians of the Galaxy director promises plenty of action, color and wit, as DC's team of outcasts embark on another rescue mission that goes awry.

The new movie is a semi-sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad (differentiated by the “the”) directed by David Ayres, which followed the adventures of a group of imprisoned villains who take on missions for the government to reduce their sentences.

The Suicide Squad features a huge star-studded cast, including Margot Robbie reprising her role for the third time as Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Sylvester Stallone also stars as King Shark, a giant, walking, talking shark.

Other cast members include Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, Michael Rooker as Savant, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, and Storm Reid as Tyla, Bloodsport’s daughter.

Will Smith’s Deadshot is missing from the cast due to a scheduling conflict and Elba had originally been recast in the role before it was decided he would play an entirely different character.

The nearly-three-minute-long trailer trailer also gives a glimpse of DC comic book supervillain Starro, a giant, colourful starfish kaiju who goes on a rampage at the end of the trailer.

The film is rated R and the trailer is age-restricted on YouTube, so viewers need to verify that they're old enough to watch the violent super villain movie trailer with Steely Dan’s “Dirty Work” playing in the background.

Director James Gunn shared the trailer on Twitter, warning fans of the gore and profanity with the caption: “Our first trailer. Warning: gore & adult language & supervillains & adventure & heart. Can't wait to see it in a theater with all of you on August 6. #TheSuicideSquad.”

The Suicide Squad is expected to hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
