Cine Europa 23 is back and is now online

The coronavirus pandemic is affecting society across the globe, but the show must go on for Cine Europa—albeit with new creative solutions.

On its 23rd year, Cine Europa goes online bringing 19 films from 20 European countries for a month in the Philippines. From October 31 to November 29, anyone can access the films just by signing up on their website

In a press release, Rafael de Bustamante, First Counsellor of the EU Delegation to the Philippines, said that Cine Europa's goal is to expose Filipinos to films that aren't made available in local theaters.

This year’s film festival was launched to the media on October 30 with Bustamante, Chairperson of the Film Development Council of the Philippines Liza Dino, ambassadors and cultural attachés of the EU member states’ embassies and cultural institutes.

“[The] celebration of the cultural partnership between the EU and the Philippines continues with Cine Europa which is getting bigger every year," Bustamante said. “The EU wants to sustain its tradition of providing highly-acclaimed European films to the Filipino moviegoers," he added.

Another milestone for Cine Europa is the launch of Festival Scope, which is a library of quality films from EU. This allows Philippine-based viewers to access films from other countries.

To launch the festival, German comic-thriller Sweethearts is set to premiere on the 31st of October at 6:30 p.m. in SM Mall of Asia Drive-In Cinema. The film is directed by Karoline Herfurth and is about a professional criminal named Mel and her easily-panicked hostage Fanny. Forced together by fate and an ill-executed diamond robbery, the couple is trapped in a race against time. Soon pursued by a relentless detective and the greedy Berlin underworld, they are left with no other choice than to work together.
